A Brief Description – How to Optimize Your Social Media for Twitter

This post is designed as  a shortcut to using social media as a business tool. Yesterday, I posted a blog post from Hubspot, that  outlined in detail what is needed to maximize the use of social media liek Facebook and Twitter.

This post is a synopsis of the best practices from Hubspot about social media
Twitter

  • tweets between 120 and 130 characters have the highest click-through rates.
  • Avoid elipses
  • Use pictures thata are exciting on Twitter. If you are a financial advisor, perhaps tweet a pitcure of the market with a blurb or a comment on your blog about the activities of the day
  • the ratio between reponses (@mentions) versus organic personal tweets should be 50-50
  • Activity and relevance is important, tweeting more than one an hour is not effective.
  • Give people a reason to take an action

Thats the jist of the post.  Hopefully that's helpful, I found creating it helpful and I learned alot. If you are a professional services firm, creating great content and knowing how to use social media is important.

Tomorrow, I'll do the Facebook part of the post.

Become an Expert In Your Market and Explode Your Leads Flow.

Don't  Cold Call Me, Be An Expert is important today in business because your suspects and prospects have become searchers. They search to solve the problems in their lives an they search to find their fun. Your customers are searching and they are searching for expertise.

Experts like Brenden Burchard, Frank Kern, T Harv Eker and other experts publish regularly and have earned millions of dollars from their expertise and celebrity.

Being an expert is all about publishing these days. Think about everyone you know that is perceived as  expert, they all  publish and publish regularly. The really famous, write books and work hard to get  their books on best seller lists, they then leverage the book into all types  of media opportunities that increase their perceived expertise and celebrity (I'll talk about the importance of celebrity in a later posts).

But even if you don't want to be a national celebrity and expert, cultivating expertise and local celebrity is important to your business. Experts (real and perceived) get more attention, people are more inclined to listen to their advice, pay attention to their opinions and want them to talk at all types of events. So cultivating expertise and celebrity is important to your business.

And in today's world being an expert could not be easier because publishing could not be easier.

The difficulty of publishing in the past is that the media was limited. Basically, there was television, newspapers, books and not much else. But today there is all types of publishing media including blogs, YouTube, Facebook, and all of the other publishing media and that is why publishing is easy there is a lot more media to publish on and they are generally free to use.

So , if there is more media, the way to become an expert is to publish and to publish in all types of media.

In todays world the best way to be considered an expert is to publish great content on every media. White papers, videos, PowerPoint presentations and webinars posted on a variety of media, focused on your area of expertise that solves your clients problems and indexed by Google, will allow your clients to find you when they are searching for problems.

Social media also increases the perception of expertise. Using Twitter and other social media increases the preception of expertise.

They will find your published work in volume and because you have published great content that solves their issues  or tells them how to start to deal with their issues will help them see you as an expert and increase their interest in buying your service.

Who gave away all the Tostitos.

This is a great story and example of creativity. My friend Eppie Vojt is a talented and smart Internet entrepreneur and while watching a game he heard “all the Tostitos”. He not only heard the words but he heard an opportunity. Here is the story of how a creative entrepreneur capitalized on a trend and made inroads into a major food company

I Just Gave Frito-Lay AllTheTostitos

How I Got All the Tostitos in the First Place

As soon as Musberger said it, I knew it would go viral — so I jumped right on it, registering the @allthetostitos Twitter handle and http://www.allthetostitos.com.  A lot of domainers and developers would have stopped there — maybe putting a parked page up on the domain and cashing in a bit… not me.  Instead, I built out the website (staying up until 4:30 am after the BCS championship game) paying homage to the meme (using Twitter’s API, YouTube’s API, and some static content).

Traffic, links, and social mentions started to roll in.  Then I did something that a lot of domainers would think is crazy.  I contacted Frito-Lay and told them I wanted to give them @allthetostitos (and the accompanying website).

What Becomes of All the Tostitos?

Today Frito-Lay started using the @allthetostitos Twitter account as the official Twitter account for the Tostitos brand.  They’ve wasted no time in putting the account to good use, as they’ve been giving out free bags of Tostitos today to some of the folks who mentioned them (@allthetostitos references).  I’ll be interested to follow the account and see exactly how they put it to use.

What Did I Get Out of It?

So I don’t have @allthetostitos anymore, and I don’t have allthetostitos.com either.  No truckloads of Tostitos have been unloaded at my house as of yet, either, though you never know what may come.  Frito-Lay hasn’t offered me a job (though, if they did, I’d be all ears).

It’s possible that as Frito-Lay begins using the account (and hopefully the website), that I’ll pull some press coverage, which would certainly be welcome.  Quite frankly, that’s the most I’m hoping for in terms of tangible benefit to me out of the whole deal.

ike a fair trade for all the Tostitos.

About Eppie

But primarily, I get the satisfaction of knowing that I helped a brand connect with its consumers in a fun, community-driven way.  I get a great story out of the whole thing — a positive life experience.  If that’s all I get out of it, that’s enough for me; seems like a fair trade for all the Tostitos.

KLM adds a Party Flight to Miami Because of Twitter

This is the first example of crowdbuying that I have seen and demonstrates the power of social media. As a result of a bet, KLM adds a party flight to Miami because of Twitter. Imagine the power of this tactic for your business. Imagine the power and connection, your customers actually tell you what they want, your provide it and then they buy it. Sweeeeet,

On a bet, party people fill KLM flight to Miami using Twitter

DJs, promoters, label reps and ‘professional party people’ from the Netherlands have persuaded Dutch airline KLM to add an extra flight to its roster. In a new twist on crowd-buying, the initiators of Fly2Miami made a bet with KLM on Twitter to organize a non-stop flight from Amsterdam to Miami.

If Fly2Miami could get 351 seats reserved before December 6th, KLM would add a flight to its schedule on 21 March 2011, specifically for people attending the Ultra Music Festival and related parties. The initiative was prompted by a Dutch filmmaker tweeting about the lack of a direct flight from Amsterdam to Miami, a query that the airline’s Twitter team rapidly responded to with a wager. Exceeding everyone’s expectations, the flight was fully booked within five hours. “We can rightly call it a first — the first time KLM will deploy an aircraft following a request on Twitter”, said Martijn van der Zee, vice president of e-commerce at KLM. “Social media are becoming more and more important to KLM to offer information and service to our customers.”

From Carrotmob‘s crowds rewarding positive environmental change, to Groupon’s daily deals for groups, crowd clout — turbo-charged by social media — provides companies across industries with new opportunities to empower consumers while improving their bottom line, or at the very least, their brand image. Mayor Cory Booker – Social Media’s New Twitter Darling?

cory booker social medias new twitter darlingIn social media we are looking how to write the best blog headlines and article, the most effective way to build our community, the best way to interact on the social media platforms. We sign up for webinars, listen to podcasts, attend conferences to be sure that we are in the know on how we can put our best foot forward to run a successful social media campaign. We pay great attention to those that have proven to be social media leaders to try and figure out their winning combination or their secret sauce.

My dear friend and someone I admire greatly @TomMartin has captured the true essence of social media and how we create signals or just make noise. We all are guilty of noise at one time or another but when we think of those that stand out in the social media space, we notice they all have one thing in common, they create signals. These signals are there for us to interact and engage with them.

We have all heard about the blizzard that pummeled the east coast, leaving holiday travelers stranded and residents stuck in snow drifts over five feet high. A NFL game was canceled due to the snow which garnered some final thoughts from Pennsylvania Govenor Ed Rendell as he prepares to leave office in a few days. Mainstream media had their crews all over New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Boston. The coverage was sensational for those of us not in the thick of it and are happy to open our doors and see concrete but what has been more sensational is the Twitter stream of Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker.

Cory Booker is the Mayor of Newark. Newark, the largest city in New Jersey is home to Newark Liberty International Airport, roughly 280,000 residents, numerous hospitals and trauma centers, the county courthouse, the performing arts center, 40 city parks, 75 public schools, Rutgers Newark, NJIT, Essex County College and let’s not forget a very large mass transit system of trains and buses. All of this is contained within 24 square miles. The city, already one of the poorest cities in NJ, has faced debilitating budget cuts and has received much attention for the recent layoff of 167 police officers and the gun violence that has erupted. Now let’s add a blizzard.

Mayor Booker has once again has taken to Twitter to help manage the clean up efforts. Last year he caught the eye of many when he personally shoveled the snow for a resident who was unable to do so. This year he has not disappointed and is out there shoveling, moving/pushing stranded cars, delivering diapers and almost a baby. He responds to residents on Twitter and if they are in need of help, he makes his way over. If a street has not been plowed, he asks for the location and gets the crew over.  There is not a team behind his Twitter that is monitoring the tweets and responding on his behalf. No, he is one man on Twitter that is making a difference.

Twitter Raised a Ton on Cash and Starts to Construct a Advertising Business Model

Advertising on Twitter is finally starting to take shape but not necessarily for small business. Never the less, small business can still use Twitter in here are some best practices for using Twitter to grow your business.

Amplify’d from www.toprankblog.com

Traditional ad dollars are most certainly moving to digital and as companies look for more ways to take advantage of technology to better connect with customers, social media is becoming the new internet.

Advertising as part of the social experience vs. being interruptive combined with the ability to measure brings many opportunities for businesses to grow their reach, brand influence and ability to engage.

In the meantime, here are general Twitter best practices:

  1. Share. Share photos and behind the scenes info about your business. Even better, give a glimpse of developing projects and events. Users come to Twitter to get and share the latest, so give it to them!
  1. Listen. Regularly monitor the comments about your company, brand, and products.
  1. Ask. Ask questions of your followers to glean valuable insights and show that you are listening.
  1. Reward. Tweet updates about special offers, discounts and time-sensitive deals.
  1. Respond. Respond to compliments and feedback in real time
  1. Demonstrate wider leadership and know-how. Reference articles and links about the bigger picture as it relates to your business.
  1. Champion your stakeholders. Retweet and reply publicly to great tweets posted by your followers and customers.
  1. Establish the right voice. Twitter users tend to prefer a direct, genuine, and of course, a likable tone from your business, but think about your voice as you Tweet. How do you want your business to appear to the Twitter community?
